Research Interests

Research interests focus on the application of remote sensing, GIS, and advanced modelling techniques to investigate impacts of both natural and anthropogenic disturbances on the dynamics of ecological systems.

Ecology, distribution and conservation of species and ecosystems using spatial science methods (remote sensing, GIS, spatial modelling), including:

• development and testing of landscape-level disturbance indices using MODIS data
• forest health; physiological activity; investigating effects of various stressors (fungal, nutrient, water) on spectral reflectance
• invasive weeds related to ecological disturbances
• dynamics of land use and land cover change: impacts on biodiversity and ecological integrity
• spectral discrimination of vegetation species and biodiversity assessment using hyperspectral remote sensing and LIDAR
• spatio-temporal dynamics of ecosystem function, and productivity

Suggested Topics for Future Students

Research topics fall under the broad areas of biogeography, ecology, and terrestrial/coastal processes, with emphasis on the application of spatial technologies to investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics of disturbances on ecosystems. Student projects can involve a variety of methods ranging from field experiments, spatial analysis (pattern analysis, spectral analysis), and/or modelling to address questions of fundamental research.

Currently there are extensive, state-of-the–art, spatial datasets covering the Wollongong local area that include: Hymap hyperspectral imagery (3m), LIDAR, high resolution digital orthophotographs (.15m), and extensive GIS coverages. Hyperion, ASTER and MODIS imagery are also available. These datasets are capable of supporting a range of research topics, suitable from honours to PhD levels.

Excellent facilities are provided by the Spatial Analysis Laboratories (SAL). In addition, a successful 2005 LIEF grant with the University of New England and the University of Southern Queensland provides access to an ASD Fieldspec spectroradiometer, chlorophyll fluorometers (PAM2100 and Water PAM) to investigate photosynthetic characteristics of plants.

  • Discrimination, mapping, modelling of vegetation communities, and/or species associated with ecological disturbance, particularly weeds, for example, multi-scale comparison of native/weed success with expected increase in extreme temperature events with climate change.
  • Assessment of vegetation stress or tolerance using multiple bio-indicators, for example, investigation of temperature thresholds for agricultural or native vegetation species.
  • Use of LIDAR and hyperspectral imagery, and novel change detection methods for wetland classification and delineation
  • Fragmentation and patch dynamics, for example, investigating optimal remote sensing classification schemes as input for landscape metrics; assessing fire as a landscape disturbance event, and/or regeneration of the landscape after fire
  • Development and testing of landscape-scale disturbance and/or drought indices using MODIS imagery
  • Land use/land cover change dynamics
  • Atmospheric chemistry, remote sensing and leaf area index combo  - in conjunction with the Atmospheric Chemistry Research Group. Could include topics such as: retrieval of cloud and aerosol properties from satellite data (eg MODIS); leaf area index (LAI) and remote sensing to evaluate fire chronosequences; evaluation of the MODIS LAI product; using fine resolution plant species data for biogenic emission simulations
